14 DAY TRIAL // AsusWrt-Merlin, well known for its custom firmware builds developed for some of ASUS’ top routers, has just announced the availability of a new version, namely 376.44 Beta 1.
The first thing that stands out compared to the previous AsusWrt-Merlin Router Firmware 374.43 is that the new update includes support for the newly-released ASUS RT-AC87 Router, which is a dual-band AC2400 Gigabit unit that intends to be the fastest wireless device ever.
As for the changes that this build brings, version 376.44 beta 1 merges with ASUS’ 376.1779 GPL, improves IPv6 support, and adds various 3G and 4G fixes. Also, the new release includes a new network map that allows users to edit device names, assign icons to devices, and more.
In addition to that, a fix is added for the Traffic Monitoring, the system log is now positioned properly, and new filesystem drivers are included for NTFS, HFS+, and FAT. Moreover, except for the RT-N16, all targeted models use Tuxera’s drivers that should result in overall USB disk performance improvements.
If you intend to apply this update, you should also know that the wifi notification icon will now report both channel and channel width for the 5 GHz band, the SSH settings layout has been modified, and FQDN is allowed on the WAN page as some service providers require this setting.
Moreover, clients that should bypass DNSFilter will not be prevented to use IPv6 DNS, the WPS button is fixed, and various IPv6-related patches have been removed as they were not compatible with ASUS’ own changes.
When it comes to the RT-AC56 and -AC68 alone, these devices now use all space for the JFFS partition, the master packages are no longer included in this firmware update due to the lack of space (however they will be downloaded from ASUS’ servers), and the Layer 7 filtering in NetFilter has been removed.
Bear in mind that you must backup the JFFS partition prior to upgrading the AC56 and AC68 routers so that no loss is encountered. Moreover, you should also know that the RT-AC87’s Ethernet ports are quite inaccurate.
