Asus to Release World's First Overclocked GeForce8800GS Graphics Card

- Cooled by a Glaciator Fansink

By: Bogdan Botezatu, Hardware Editor

Asus has just introduced two new graphic cards based on Nvidia GeForce 8800GS chipset: the ASUS EN8800GS TOP/HTDP/384M and EN8800GS/HTDP/384M. The latter is world's
first overclocked version of the GeForce 8800GS chipset, that boasts an 8 percent gain in video performance comparing to a standard 8800GS-based graphics adapter.

Since we are talking about overclocked editions, the cooling solutions are extremely important. Both models come with the Glaciator Fansink thermal solution to offer quiet and efficient heat dissipation for improved and stable performance. Further overclocking can be achieved directly by the user through the software application called SmartDoctor, that gives direct access to the shader clock settings.

The EN8800GS TOP/HTDP/384M model boosts the average performance of the stock video cards from 50MHz up to 600MHz for the GPU clock, from 1375MHz up to 1700MHz for the shaders and from 800MHz up to 900MHz for the memory clock. Overclocking dramatically improves the overall functionality of the system. The 3DMark 06 benchmarking software reports that the overclocked version scores 10399 points, while a regular card would only achieve 9571.

The ASUS EN8800GS Series video cards come with the Glaciator Fansink cooling solution, designed to dissipate the excessive heat away from the GPU core. Its special ball-bearing design ensures a quiet operation even when running at full speed. The total noise level is situated at only 25dB, which makes it almost imperceptible even in a noiseless environment. Both video cards come with the Cross heatsink that also lowers the Power IC temperature by 15ºC on average, for a more stable power output.

The new SmartDoctor offers the gamers the opportunity to tweak the Shader Clock and Engine Clock independently, to squeeze the last bit of performance out of the system. All these can be achieved without rebooting or flashing the system BIOS.
