Asus was one of the first notebook makers to concentrate its attention towards delivering more eco-friendly products and recently the outfit has reached a new milestone in this endeavor by building the first laptop to fully meet the requirements of the PAS 2060:2010 standard for Carbon Neutrality, the U53SD Bamboo.

In order to achieve this feat, Asus had to bring a series of changes to the design of the U53SD and started with using a bamboo cover and palm rest that is said to reduce its carbon footprint by up to 10 percent.

Furthermore, since bamboo is 100% recyclable, Asus has selected to make the packaging of its laptop entirely out of recycled bamboo paper.

Finally, the last “green“ technology that was introduced by the Taiwanese notebook maker in the U53SD is the inclusion of its proprietary Super Hybrid Engine, which Asus claims it can provide 20% lower energy consumption that other laptops based on the same hardware platform.

“Asus supports all available strategies to mitigate climate change,” said Frank Lin, chief quality officer at Asus.

“Aside from reducing carbon emissions at enterprise level, we also follow the Integrated Product Policy (IPP) to develop energy-saving technologies that reduce the carbon footprint of our products through our Eco design concepts,” concluded the company’s rep.

The Asus U53SD Bamboo Collection is built around a 15.6-inch screen with a resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels, and can pack various Intel dual-core processors from the Core i3, i5, or i7 product ranges with speeds up to 2.66GHz.

These are accompanied by 4GB of DDR3 memory, an Nvidia GeForce 310M graphics card, a 5400 RPM hard drive with capacities up to 640GB and a Blu-ray combo unit.

Other features include a 2MP webcam, USB 3.0 and HDMI ports, 802.11n WiFi and Gigabit Ethernet connectivity, as well as a 5-in-1 card reader and an 8-cell battery pack.

Sadly, Asus hasn’t unveiled when the U53SD notebook will become available or for just how much it will retail once it hits the streets.
