What could possibly go wrong in the world to pit these two superheroes against each other in a fight to the death?

The first official trailer for the upcoming “Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice” made it very clear that the “v.” in the title isn’t there just for aesthetic purposes: after the events in “Man of Steel,” Batman is coming after Superman.

Apparently, the humans Superman helped save from General Zod are very much in agreement with Batman: right at the beginning of the trailer (second video below), you hear them challenge Supes’ position of power, especially since he’s an alien being not held accountable by anyone.

Accountability, that’s what drives the conflict between these two superheroes, astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson explained during his appearance on Jon Stewart’s show. You will find his explanation in full in the first video at the end of this post, starting at the 3.32-minute mark.

Superman doesn’t report to anyone that we know of, which means he can do whatever he deems right, behave in whichever way he considers appropriate at any given moment.

“So at the end of the day, what might matter is the public reception of the superhero's conduct - and if Batman executes our wishes in the city and Superman does what the hell he wants, that's a conflict,” deGrasse Tyson says.

So Batman, even though he’s just a regular guy in a fancy belt (Stewart’s words, not mine), acts on behalf of the people, whereas Superman only acts to maintain his ideal of peace. Said ideal might not be the same as that of the people he protects, which is when Batman comes in.

“Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice” stars Ben Affleck and Henry Cavill as the 2 superheroes, is directed by Zack Snyder and will be out in March 2016.
