Asthma Increases Risk of Suicide

Depression and suicidal thoughts are said to be plaguing a large number of asthma patients

Asthma is a chronic condition of the respiratory system which manifests a rapidly increasing prevalence in the developed world. Indeed, one in four urban children in modern developed societies is suffering from this disease, which involves an inflammation of the airways in response to a number of external triggers such as poor air quality, dust, tobacco smoke and many others.
Asthma is, of course, not restricted to children, and despite often being a lifelong disease, it is manageable with a combination of medication and careful management of the patient's environment.

A recent study conducted at the Johns Hopkins University School of Public Health in Baltimore has showed that in addition to all the problems that come with managing the asthma itself, people suffering from this disease and women in particular are predisposed to depression and even suicidal thoughts and attempts. This comes as a result of being forced to live with the thought of having a chronic condition that can often span a lifetime, combined with a series of other factors, such as living and working environment, stress and the overall quality of life. The team that conducted the study thus warns us that the psychological effects of asthma should not be treated lightly.

"Researchers have speculated that the relationship between asthma and suicidal behaviors is possibly because of ensuring mood and anxiety that results from disability and discomfort associated with asthma, which can be a lifelong disease", the study authors write in the May issue of the Annals of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology. "Individuals might have frequent thoughts of death with increasing severity solely because they have a potentially life-threatening illness." They advise people suffering from asthma to stay positive and demand that doctors who notice symptoms of depression in their patients refer them immediately to a psychologist.

I can completely relate to this article..my daughter [24 yoa] has suffered with asthma since 2 years old. She has had severe asthma constantly. Its never been under control. Besides fighting with school boards, drs, hospitals, family and friends to get them to understand how bad her asthma conditions were/are-- she struggled with lost days in school, friends activities she enjoyed to learning problems such as dyslexia ..insecurity..self esteem..to no confidence and eventually introverted [hiding behind my legs] so to speak. Countless Er visits hospitals stays-close calls and near death episodes to emt 911 calls "we have no pulse"..twice. Intubated - collapsed lung- two chest tubes- 33 days in icu....to migraines memory loss lack of focus emotional rollercoaster- meds failing to work- and depression the worst of it all- and now I feel and fear she has reached the end of her rope. Dr explains to her the only way she will ever find control is to return to office every other day for two shots of meds-another steroid and in combination with another....for the remainder of her life and she refuses-"no iam done I have had enough of this crap Im not doing it"-Dr. says if you dont you will die! she says "oh well....then I die." So as her mother I have researched countless hours trying to find something that will be anything short of a miracle , maybe drs have missed or forgot or wasnt aware of..I can dream / hope...cant I? I cant lose her i wont stop searching for help or answers...so with this article I feel its a good start of realizing the affects of asthma is not just in breathing...thank you {autumns mom}
