The upcoming reboot of Atari's Asteroids, the first-person Asteroids: Outpost, won't enable users to play by their lonesome at launch.

Developer Salty Games has stated that Asteroids: Outpost won't launch with a single-player campaign on the Steam forums, emphasizing that it will be a multiplayer-only title that tasks players with building and defending a space base against incoming asteroids and, evidently, other players.

A Salty Games representative has been pretty clear that the company did not plan to create a single-player campaign for the Early Access edition of the title, and is not planning on having one for launch either.

He has, however, revealed that the studio is open to creating servers that are geared more toward player versus environment action than toward PvP, in order to cater to gamers who would rather live in peace than under constant threat of invasion.

He has clarified that the PvE component of Asteroids: Outpost will consist of players doing their best to survive the harsh environment of outer space, battling a constant barrage of asteroids falling from the sky and oxygen deprivation.

He has underlined that, even without having other players to blow you out of the sky, surviving the various environmental hazards will be hard enough.

There will be no story, just a sandbox

This means that there will be no story in the upcoming title, aside from the story you yourself write as you mine asteroids and try to survive.

For the time being, there are no further details on how PvP and PvE will work, or how the division between players will be made.

The game was revealed a month ago, taking everyone by surprise. Atari describes it as an open-world, sandbox survival experience, a modern reimagining of the classic arcade hit of the '70s.

You will be able to craft, customize and upgrade equipment, ally with friends and try to make the best of your situation, while expanding your claim and mining ever more resources.

Asteroids: Outpost is expected to land on Steam Early access sometime soon, with no prospective release date revealed yet.
