Glu has finally launched its "Asteroids" game, with a slight delay, as the game was set for an August release. The concept behind it has been available for a long time now, as it is built after the model of one of the oldest arcade games out there, with the same name.

Glu has taken this concept and reshaped it in order to best suit mobile phone use and become just as popular as it was almost 30 years ago, when it first hit the market with the help of Atari. There are some nostalgic players too out there, which gives reason to the "classic" gameplay mode, which tries to keep as faithful as possible to the initial concept. Aside from this one, there are also several new innovative ones that mark an important evolution for the game.

"Asteroids captures the timeless energy and addictive gameplay of the original arcade game, a true reminder of the hours spent at the arcade, but also gives gamers completely new themes, gameplay and graphics that take advantage of today's technology", observed Jill Braff, senior vice president of global publishing, Glu. Because of this, "Gamers young and old love retro arcade classics like this one and people will be pleasantly surprised by the game's modern depth and sophistication", he further added.

The new "Asteroids" game brings new weapons and better graphics and sounds to match the mobile game evolution seen over the past few years. There is also a health meter that helps gamers fight for a longer time. Still, it keeps the same easy to use controls that make it even more enjoyable and perfect for mobile phone use.

The game has managed to win a 4-star rating (out of 5) and an Editor's Award from WGWorld.com. The most interesting aspect about it is that it manages to satisfy those who appreciate the classic arcade version of the game and the one who want to see innovation both.
