The upcoming Assassin's Creed: Revelations video game will drop the puzzle sequences from previous games before it, like Assassin's Creed 2 and Brotherhood, instead opting to intrigue players by letting them guide Desmond, the modern-day protagonist, through the dark recesses of the Animus.

Revelations promises to answer many questions concerning the two main protagonists of the series, Altair and Ezio, but also to advance the story of Desmond, their modern-day ancestor, whose story is set to end in a new Assassin's Creed game next year.

With the second game, a special sort of puzzle sequences was introduced, as part of uncovering the 'Truth' about the Animus, the machine that allows Desmond to tap into his genetic memories of Altair and Ezio.

In Revelations, these puzzles, which consisted of all sorts of things, won't appear, as Ubisoft wants to present a new type of challenge to players.

"The puzzle sequence as seen in Assassin's Creed 2 and Assassin's Creed Brotherhood are not coming back for Revelations. However, an all new offer based on Desmond's experience in the Animus will offer to fans a new way to explore the Assassin's Creed universe," Ubisoft creative director Alexandre Amacio told CVG.

"Mystery is at the heart of the entire Desmond experience; riddles, signs, symbols, and half remembered dreams. The majority of the game-play in these Animus section focuses on movement, timing, and precision, but we also include some illusion based puzzles inspired by the work of Rene Magritte and Roger Penrose. The main goal here is to encourage the player to think and engage with the environment, not simply pass it by."

While the core gameplay in Assassin's Creed games involve, as you may imagine, assassinations, the puzzle sequences in the past two titles were breaths of fresh air and provided a nice change of pace, while rewarding clever players with even more backstory and feeding other conspiracy theories.

Assassin's Creed: Revelations is out on November 15, for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, and sometime in December for the PC.
