The long-awaited Assassin's Creed movie that's been in development for quite some time has just received some leaked details about the plot, which deals with the Spanish Inquisition, as well as the dual roles of leading actor Michael Fassbender.

The Assassin's Creed video game franchise from Ubisoft has seen a big number of releases exploring a wide array of historical settings, protagonists, and mechanics. It's also branched out, with animated movies, comics, or even books dealing with storylines from the series.

The biggest non-game project, however, is the movie that's been stuck in development for quite some time, despite having big Hollywood actor Michael Fassbender attached to star in the leading role and even co-produce through his own company.

Now, a new cumulated report from VCPost has brought to light quite a few leaked details about the upcoming game, originally coming from FilmDivider.

It seems that the new Assassin's Creed movie is going to take place in Spain and focus on the infamous Inquisition led by Tomas de Torquemada.

Michael Fassbender will play a double role, as the film is also going to feature a double-plot, one taking place in the present day and one taking place in the historical setting. In the present, Fassbender is Michael Lynch, a death row inmate who unwillingly enters the Assassins vs. Templars conflict.

The inmate gets subjected to tests from a researcher called Joseph that might be working for the Templar-led Abstergo corporation, ran by Alan Rikkan, who might not have a physical presence, only a looming voiceover.

Fassbender, through the Animus technology already seen in the games, explores his genetic memory to control Aguilar de Agarorobo, an assassin during the Spanish Inquisition. He'll be helped by a female assassin named Lara and they'll have to take down Tomas de Torquemada, the Templar leader of the Inquisition.

The actual action and plot are still unclear but it does seem like it's borrowing heavily from previous games in the series, such as the first Assassin's Creed or its sequel, in terms of core premise and historical action.

Torquemada, for what it's worth, was featured briefly in a mobile-only spinoff called Assassin's Creed 2: Discovery, and worked for main Assassin's Creed 2 villain Rodrigo Borgia. It's unclear if he'll retain this role in the movie.

As of yet, full-fledged games in the series haven't touched the Spanish Inquisition historical event, but who knows what might happen in 2015, when the movie is set to appear.
