Wesley Pincombe, the creative director working on the Freedom Cry add-on for Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, believes that longtime fans who pick it up will be able to spot a number of hints linked to future of the franchise.

He tells Eurogamer that, “This is primarily an Adewale story - Edward isn't present - but we do shoot a couple of lines back and forth with him reminiscing about his past. There are some but our fans will only discover them in the future. They're in your face, but you'd have to be a hardcore fan to understand them.”

Speculation about future Assassin’s Creed games has suggested that Ubisoft will make the shift to feudal Japan, the French Revolution, Victorian London or Ancient Egypt.

The company has promised that all the events of Black Flag have a clear place in the overall meta-story of the franchise and that they have certain plans to deliver a conclusion for all fans who have stuck with the franchise from the beginning.

Until then, players will be able to enjoy a new part of the Caribbean and explore the life of Adewale.

Pincombe adds, “You're going to a new setting with new crowd life. New enemies, new AI. Port-au-Prince is a French colony - there are no French colonies in Black Flag so that is all new.”

The new city was designed specifically to respond to criticism leveled at The Tyranny of King Washington downloadable content for Assassin’s Creed III, which used the same areas as the core game.

Ubisoft says that it is constantly listening to players and creates content based on their feedback.

Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag will get more DLC packs in the coming months, but at the moment, Ubisoft has not offered any clear details on content they will include.
