Jean-Sebastien Decant, the leading designer working on Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, says that the game is seen by the team at Ubisoft as a new beginning for the series, which includes some big changes in the core gameplay.

The most prominent of the modifications is linked to how the present-day section of the game is shaped, according to information given to the Official PlayStation Magazine.

The developer says, “with Desmond dead, we decided to go for something different. Put it in perspective with what we do at Ubisoft… so: Abstergo, you walk in that building, it’s a bit like walking into Ubisoft, we wanted to offer to the fans a way to dig into the mysteries of Assassin’s Creed and the templars.”

Gamers will no longer have to worry about enemies when they exit the Animus, but they will able to use a new piece of technology in order to hack terminals and get some more lore linked to the Assassin’s Creed universe.

Jean-Sebastien Decant adds, “as for the mystery, throughout the game, many times, a few hundred times, you have moments that are narrative-based, we tell you something about being a researcher at Abstergo, your hacking capacities and so on.”

Ubisoft has already said that previous conspiracies linked to the franchise, like Juno and others, will be included in Black Flag, although they will not be the focus of the story.

It’s unclear whether the publisher is already working on another title that will expand on them or whether they will continue to be a smaller part of future releases.

Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag introduces more advanced naval battle mechanics and new exploration and combat options for the cities of the Caribbean.

The game will be out in late October on the current generation of home consoles and in November on the Xbox One, the PC and the PlayStation 4.
