The team wanted to focus on the piracy phenomenon rather than on character progress

Darby McDevitt, the leading writer working on Assassin’s Creed at Ubisoft, says that he had no intention of mapping the entire life of main character Edward Kenway in the recent Black Flag.

He tells VG247 that, “I felt it was time to change the pace of the narrative a little bit. Two of the six Assassins Creed games have spanned three decades, which is great for showing a certain kind of character development.”

He feels exploring the childhood of the protagonist would have taken the player away from the core of the action and the impressive sea battles that the game is creating.

Ubisoft has not yet offered any official information on the future of the series, but a new game will probably be launched in the fall of this year on the PlayStation 4, the Xbox One, the PC and current-gen consoles.
