Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag might no longer feature Desmond as the main character, but the development team at Ubisoft promises that the meta narrative of the series, involving conspiracies and the two organizations, will continue to be central to the experience.

Jean Guesdon, the creative director working on the game, is quoted by AllGamesBeta saying that Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag “is not a reboot, neither is it a spinoff and we’re continuing to develop a consistent mythology. So yes, Desmond will be referred to as a very important legacy of the AC universe.”

Apparently, the team is also working on a way of integrating present day gameplay sections although their core structure and mechanics will be changed.

Guesdon adds, “Abstergo Entertainment is a playground and players will be immersed like never before in the AC universe. They will become part of the AC universe, able to meet some already known protagonists of the AC franchise.”

Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag is designed around Edward, the grandfather of Connor, who is living out his existence as a pirate but becomes involved in the battle between Templars and Assassins.

The new game will take full advantage of the naval combat mechanics introduced in Assassin’s Creed III, with about 40 percent of the game taking place at sea.

The traditional assassination gameplay will also be improved with new options and more open ended results.

Ubisoft will also introduce a number of new characters and will allow players to explore the core themes of the franchise.

Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag is set to launch on the PlayStation 4 from Sony and the yet unrevealed Xbox 720 from Microsoft, as well as the PC and the Nintendo-made Wii U.

Gamers who own a current-gen console will also be able to play the game when it launches in fall.
