Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag, like previous games in the series, will see players control not just protagonist Edward Kenway while exploring the Caribbean, but also experience the life of a present-day character.

This is apparently an Abstergo employee, according to Ubisoft.

While in previous games players guided Desmond Miles in the present day, in Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag, they'll control a regular person who's working for Abstergo Industries, the modern-day corporation controlled by the Templars.

According to the game's writer, Darby McDevitt, who talked with Kotaku, the modern-day portions will let players explore Abstergo from the inside and allow them to find emails, videos, and audio recordings that flesh out the story.

Players will also be able to tap into other Animus devices, allowing them to explore the memories of other assassins, like Assassin's Creed 3: Liberation's Aveline, who has exclusive missions on the PS3 and PS4.

Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag is out this year for PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and Wii U.
