Besides going on all sorts of adventures while controlling Edward Kenway in Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag, players will also need to watch over his ship, the Jackdaw, and its crew, as lots of things depend on how happy the sailors are.

Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag puts players in the shoes of Edward Kenway, a pirate assassin who leads his own ship, the Jackdaw, through the Golden Age of Piracy in the Caribbean.

While players will go on lots of adventures alongside Kenway and his ship, they'll also interact in many ways with the crew, especially during naval battles.

"If you’re not really helping your crew and they’re just dying left, right and center, their morale is going to drop," Game Director Ashraf Ismail said on the UbiBlog.

"They’re going to start dying faster and faster and they’re going to be screaming out for your help. You’ll hear it. You’ll see it. They’ll even reach out to Edward as they’re dying to say, Captain, help us."

Players are motivated to join battles and boarding attempts as they'll not only ensure the victory of the Jackdaw but also inspire the crew.

"When you help them, the momentum changes and they start succeeding more," Ismail added.

"Even beyond that, they’ll come to your rescue. If you’re taking a lot of damage and you’re being surrounded, the crew will jump in and help you. You kind of need to make sure your crew is alive and doing well/ When you hear them asking for help it’s to your benefit to go and help them."

The crew's morale will be transmitted to the player by his first mate, Adewale, who'll be very vocal about Kenway's actions and even has a separate side story that will be explored in the Season Pass for Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag.
