Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag on the PC has received a free update that adds several improvements to the PhysX effects already present in the stunning game.

Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag appeared on a variety of platforms in recent months, from the PS3 and Xbox 360 to the PS4 and Xbox One.

Even so, one of the best-looking versions was the PC one, as Ubisoft partnered with graphics card company Nvidia to implement a wide array of new technologies and visual options into the game.

Now, a fresh update for the PC edition of Black Flag has just appeared, allowing users with Nvidia graphics cards to take advantage of a variety of improvements to the PhysX effects.

"PhysX adds realistic particle effects to firearms, smoke bombs, chimneys, torches, and camp fires throughout Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, enhancing image quality and the believability of the action by a considerable degree," Nvidia said about the new improvements in a blog post.

"Each PhysX particle is further enhanced by our new Particle Shadow Mapping technology, enabling particle effects to cast shadows and self-shadow one another. This is particularly beneficial for thick, heavy smoke effects, such as pistol and musket fire, instantly emphasizing their density to the viewer, and further increasing image quality."

What's more, besides the PhysX improvements, the new update also tweaks other effects that aren't exclusive to Nvidia graphics cards.

"Together with updates to Percentage-Closer Soft Shadows and DirectX 11 tessellated light rays, the new NVIDIA PhysX effects in Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag make one of the year’s best games look and play even better, further cementing the PC version’s status as the definitive edition."
