Assassin's Creed was one of 2007's most interesting titles, telling the story of master Assassin Altair, a man who single-handedly shaped how the 1100s Crusades were fought and for whom nothing could stand in the way. That is, except water, as, when Altair fell in it, he would immediately drown, prompting up the loading screen to appear.

This made quite a lot of fans angry, as Altair could easily kill almost anyone, could execute death-defying jumps, could climb up on almost any surface, yet a small patch of water was fatal to him. Luckily, the team at Ubisoft has decided to listen to fans, and, in the upcoming sequel the new assassin, Ezio, will be able to swim around Venice.

Here's what the game's lead designer, Patrick Plourde, had to say about the decission: “We listened to the feedback of the players who were pretty vocal that the fact that Altair couldn't swim wasn't feeling right for a master Assassin – they were right. Also our new setting which included Venice has a much stronger need to interact with water. So that explains why swimming wasn't in Assassin's Creed but is in Assassin's Creed II.”

Plourde revealed that, for the first game, including a swimming mechanic just wasn't feasible, as water was only featured in one mission, set in a harbor, where Altair needed to jump on top of pillars in order to avoid it. This time around though, as Venice is filled with water in Assassin's Creed 2, things needed to change, as Ezio wouldn't have been a natural around the city if he couldn't swim or if the slightest contact with the substance killed him.

Do you still think that the first game should have included a swimming mechanic or would it have made less of a difference for the majority of gamers? Leave us a comment on this subject.

When you are living in a desert than what is one need to swim. Al-Tair was a desert man and he have no concern with water. If he didn't swim but he was still a master assassin. Now Ezio swim's that is because he is not living in desert. He is in Venice and he should know how to swim.

I think not allowing Altair to swim in AC1 was ridiculous. I remember the 1st time I reached the Sibrand assassination... After the annoying (unskippable) cutscene where he kills the monk and dumps him into the sea, I made my way towards his ship. Unfortunately I got detected a range of baddies attacked me. One hit me and I flew into the ocean... no biggie right? Big biggie! I died instantly and remember screamed Whoa! (well it was a bit more vulgar than that) - that simply didn't happen.
In my opinion, the developers intended Altair to die whenever he landed in water. It's nonsense for Ubisoft to claim it was unfeasable. This mission came later in the game, so they probably wanted to make the parkour a little bit more challenging - i.e: avoid the water or die scenerio.
Actually, there is a way around. I actually reached Sibrand without passing the water. If you head right, you can actually reach his ship easier (the parkour is simpler). Unfortunately you'll encounter more baddies so you may have to be prepared to put up a fight.
Regardless of the annoyances though, I must add that I thoroughly enjoyed AC1 and am looking forward to AC2 with anticipation.

Just because they intended for Altair to die whenever he landed in water doesn't rule out the fact that adding the ability to swim to the engine for one area in the time frame wouldn't be unfeasible, nor worth the effort.

I think that it is crazy that he cant swim its quite frustrating when your trying to assassinate a guard aand a drunk pushes you in the water and you die i could understand you lose health until you are out but Altair is a master assassin and he dips his pinky toe in the water and dies it makes no sense.
