Former model turned actor Ashton Kutcher has always been in top shape but, these days, he has extra motivation to work out and be the best he can be: if the end of the world comes, he wants to know he’ll be able to protect his family.

Ashton is in the latest issue of Men’s Fitness, where he’s talking about his grueling exercise routines and how he’s constantly pushing his physical limits to make sure he’ll handle whatever the future holds in store.

He’s not joking either. When he goes out for jogs outside his LA home, he imagines he’s being chased by zombies or aliens. He practices yoga in the sun, pretending he’s in the desert and has no water, he tells the mag.

He’s also learning Krav Maga, hand-to-hand combat, to make sure that he’ll be physically capable of defending his family from other people, when mankind will plunge into panic and desperation as it loses electricity.

It may sound like a good (but not original) script for a post-apocalyptic movie, but it’s what keeps Ashton motivated to be at the top of his game with his workouts. It may also be likely to happen, says the actor.

“It won’t take very much, I’m telling you. It will not take much for people to hit the panic button. The amount of convenience that people rely on based on electricity alone. You start taking out electricity and satellites, and people are going to lose their noodle,” he says.

In fact, he got a first taste of what’s to come last Christmas, when he and his family were stranded at a mountain cabin for 14 hours during a power shortage. It was then that he realized that he needed training for Armageddon.

“It was 20 below zero. I got my guns out. We made a fire. We went to the grocery store, and the doors were open because they’re all electronic. People were rolling in and out, clearing out the shelves,” Kutcher recalls with a shudder.

“I’m telling you, it was like a preview [of what’s to come]… All of my physical fitness regimen is completely tailored around the end of day. I stay fit for no other reason than to save the people I care about,” he adds.

If the end of the world comes, Ashton Kutcher will be prepared for it.
