Still, Chelsea did not manage to keep the whole thing as quiet as possible, and Arsenal responded. Since the Premiership - and European - rules are stating, pretty clear, that any official is not to contact a player during his contract, Chelsea had to pay some huge fines.

The Portuguese coach had to pay a pretty big fine and was continuously criticized in the English media for his lack of fair-play, while Ashley Cole received a 130.000 euros fine from his club. So, instead of earning more for his new club, he had to pay for his wrongdoing. It seems that the conflict between the two - Wenger and Cole - is still very serious, since the technician was the one that found out about the whole deal. More, the Frenchman wanted to hear nothing about Cole's transfer to Stanford Bridge.
