Though only a few days ago the two put up a united front for photographers on a public outing, Ashlee Simpson and Pete Wentz’s marriage has come to an end. She has just filed for divorce, citing irreconcilable differences.
Rumblings about
trouble in paradise started making the rounds the other day, when sources told the US tabs that Ashlee was sick of Pete’s “erratic” ways and wanted out of the marriage.
TMZ now reports that the split was amicable and that the main focus of the two remains on the well-being of their son, for which reason they will try to keep this out of the media.
“In documents filed in LA County Superior Court, Simpson cites ‘irreconcilable differences’ as the reason for the divorce. She’s asking for joint legal custody and primary physical custody of two-year-old Bronx,” TMZ writes.
Ashlee is also asking for spousal and child support, the documents state. Apparently, the two did not have a prenup signed when they were married in May 2008.
This, of course, could complicate divorce proceedings but, according to a statement from Ashlee’s rep, they’re not going to make of the divorce a public battle.
“After careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to file for divorce. We remain friends and deeply committed and loving parents to our son Bronx, whose happiness and well-being remains our number one priority,” the two say in the joint statement.
“We ask that everyone honor our privacy as we navigate this next phase of our lives,” the statement adds.
Even so, celebrity bloggers and glossy mags are having a field day speculating on what may have gone wrong with the marriage.
As noted above, there are some rumors that claim that Pete has been acting “erratically” as of late. There is also talk that he wants to pursue his music career while Ashlee would rather want a quiet family life, at home.
Then there’s the third theory, that the two simply “grew apart.” This one seems to be the most popular for the time being.
