Less than a week ago, Lady Gaga set tongues wagging on the topic of the name of her first single off the upcoming album, “ARTPOP,” after she posted online a photo with the word “Applause.” As it turns out, that’s the name of the song – and above is the accompanying artwork.

Released to WWD, the striking photo means to show a new side of Lady Gaga the icon: that of the artist at the end of the show.

“It’s the end of the night after the show. When I look at it I see that there is a longing for the applause,” Gaga explains for the same media outlet.

“I see that there is a void that is leaking onstage, that the performer is leaking, that the art is sort of becoming something else in front of your eyes. Something more human, something more honest,” she adds.

The photo was shot by Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin.

“Applause” comes out on August 19 and, until then, Gaga is determined to stay tight lipped about it and not say anything as regards a change in sound or even the message of the song.

She will also be performing the song at the MTV Video Music Awards 2013.
