Putting trash to excellent use, San Francisco-based artist Jason Mecier is creating stunning 3D mosaics / works of arts of the hottest celebrities of the moment, using their own discarded trash for it.

Before anyone goes thinking that Mecier must be always prowling celebrity hotspots and residence areas, searching through garbage, one should not that the stars themselves are often involved in the creative process.

They or their people provide him with the raw material required for his work, PopEater informs.

“Mecier often contacts celebs directly and asks them for a little bit of their junk to help show more of who they really are,” the e-zine says.

In other words, by looking at each of the portraits he makes, we can see not only a striking resemblance to the person but also how they must be like in real life – after all, it’s their trash we’re looking at.

“I enjoy trying to match the items with the essence of each unique subject. These days, much of my material is gifted to me from friends, family, fans and, of course, the celebrities themselves,” Mecier explains.

The latest collection includes portraits of the likes of Paris Hilton, Tina Fey, Conan O’Brien, Pink, Chelsea Handler and Jimmy Fallon. He’s also interested in doing one for Snooki of “Jersey Shore” but hasn’t yet gotten to it.

Speaking with the media a while back, the artist explained that he’s always been encouraged to express his creativity, ever since he was a child.

“When I was young, I remember being mesmerized by my grandma’s paintings, weaving, mosaics, sculptures, collages and stained glass work that filled my grandparents’ house and yard. If she was working on an art project, she would set me up at a nearby table with a project of my own to work on,” Mecier explained.

He’s not the only one to use trash for art just recently either. As we also informed you the other day, HA Schult created an entire hotel out of 12 tons of trash washed up on European beaches.

It was open for visitors last weekend in Madrid, Spain.
