Catholic critics see this man's work as "scandalous," "shameful," and "blasphemous"

French sculptor Soasig Chamaillard sees himself as a religious kitsch artist. He takes old statuettes of the Virgin and refurbishes them, adding his own little twist.

All the sculptures are adapted to modern pop culture – from their clothes, to their hair, to the accessories they wear. Some of Chamaillard's virgins are rock stars, unicorns or astronauts.

The artist's Madonnas resemble the pop-icon more than they do the Biblical character. In some cases Mary transforms herself completely, losing human form to become the iconic Hello Kitty or My Little Pony.

Users of the Observatoire de la Christianophobie website are outraged by this form of art, HuffPost reports. They consider it "scandalous," "shameful," and "blasphemous," and their reactions are extremely aggressive:

"May this 'artist' burn in hell and may flames devour this gallery," one user says.

Another user just feels extremely offended by the desanctification of the Virgin. "Faced with so much sacrilege tears came spontaneously to my eyes," she says.
