Video game publisher Bethesda Softworks and developer Arkane Studios have announced that they are working together on a new project called Dishonored, which is set to be launched on the PC, the Xbox 360 from Microsoft and the PlayStation 3 from Sony during 2012.

The game is described as being a wide open experience where the player can choose between very different types of play.

Dishonored will offer players the option to move around stealthily and take out enemies with traps and subterfuge without triggering any alerts, but those who are looking for direct confrontation and the chance to slaughter tens of enemies will also have the tools to realize their desires.

The developers are also saying that the morality of the player will be determined by his actions and not through complex dialog trees.

The development of Dishonored is being lead by Raphael Colantonio, who was the lead designer of Arx Fatalis and Dark Messiah of Might & Magic, and by Harvey Smith, a legend in the gaming business because he has worked on the original Deus Ex, one of the most influential titles when it comes to open world, choice-based gaming.

Raphael Colantonio, one of the two game directors, has stated when the announcement was made that, “At Arkane we have a passion for creating deep, immersive game experiences. To be able to finally share details of our project is both extremely exciting and satisfying.”

Arkane Studios has been purchased by Bethesda Softworks parent company ZeniMax during 2010, and this is the first title it is creating with the new publisher.

Bethesda has been expanding in the last few years, picking up development studios like Arkane, id Software and working with other teams, like Obsidian.

Its biggest upcoming games are RAGE, the first-person shooter that arrives in October, and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, which is slated for early November.
