Last month, Ariana Grande premiered her new hit song, “Break Free.” While fans were enthused to hear new material from the singer, they were also quick to notice that some of the lyrics of the song didn't actually sound right to native English speakers, or to people with a firm grasp of English grammar in general.

After her hit song “Problem” topped the charts, Ariana must have thought that she was on a roll and that people wouldn't notice her stretching the boundaries of the English grammar. In her new song “Break Free,” the singer can be heard saying “Don't wanna hear you lie tonight/ Now that I've become who I really are.”

Some of you will surely note that “I are” is not the correct conjugation but Ariana has recently told Time that she's not only aware of the problem but she also tried to fight the issue in the lyrics back when she was first recording the song.

She pointed a blaming finger at her producer, famed musician Max Martin, who thought that the lyrics were fine just the way they were. Ariana claims that “I fought him on it the whole time. I am not going to sing a grammatically incorrect lyrics, help me, God!”

The producer's response was “It's funny – just do it!” which we all know are always the words one of your friends say before something bad happens to you. In was true in Ariana's case, because soon after the song was released, she got blasted by fans for singing in poor English.

Now Grande is upset “I know it's funny and silly, but grammatically incorrect things make e cringe sometimes.” She eventually gave in to her producer, as can be heard today in the song.

In the end, Ariana just learned to live with it, “I was like, whatever, let’s do it and have some fun. I need to shake it off and let it go and be a little less rigid and old. I’m like 90. I need to not be that old.”

The singer hasn't been getting the best of news lately. Apart from this lyrics scandal, she also had to go through the experience of losing her grandfather to cancer last month and also it was rumored that she broke up with her boyfriend Jai Brooks because he wasn't more supportive through her ordeal.

Still, you have to give her credit for at least trying to uphold proper conjugation in her songs.
