Ariana Grande, the 20-year-old who shot to fame on Nickelodeon and is now working hard to launch herself as a mainstream singer, is often criticized by fans online for wearing her hair in the same way over and over again. The explanation for that is simple, as she makes it clear in a post on her Instagram.

Ariana’s signature style these days is a retro-inspired half ponytail, which is subdued yet voluminous at the same time. She says that all this is meant to hide the fact that her natural hair is badly damaged by years of bleaching and dyeing.

Unlike other young stars, like Jennifer Lawrence, who decided to cut it all off and start afresh, Ariana is using hair pieces to allow her hair time to recover. And frankly, she says, those who don’t like the way she styles it should really walk a mile in her shoes to see how it feels.

“Since people give me such a hard time about my hair I thought I’d take the time to explain the whole situation to everybody. I had to bleach my hair and dye it red every other week for the first 4 years of playing Cat… as one would assume, that completely destroyed my hair. I now wear a wig on Sam & Cat,” the singer says.

She explains that whatever is left of her natural hair is now back to her natural brown but because it’s so damaged, she has no other choice but to wear it in a ponytail. The rest is all smoke and mirrors – and fake hair.

“I tried wigs, they looked RIDICULOUS. Tried a weave because I am working on a new project and want to try some different looks and literally wanted to rip my scalp off. So as annoying as it is for y’all to have to look at the same hair style all the time, it’s all that works for now (AND I’m comfortable for the first time in years)…,” she writes.

“And trust me, it’s even more difficult for me to have to wait forever for my natural hair to grow back and to have to wear more fake hair than every drag queen on earth combined. So PLEASE gimme a break about the hair (or just don’t look at me lol). IT’S JUST HAIR AFTER ALL. There are way way way more important things. Love y’all very much,” Ariana concludes by saying.
