The group C most important clash - actually, almost every game in Group C may be considered important - was over before it even started. Barely did they enter the field, that the Serbians were already 1-0 down. The goal was a true masterpiece. A great combination of passes saw Maxi Rodrigues only having to push the ball into the net.
Well, it's not like the Serbian goalkeeper, Jevric, wasn't to blame. Still, if you had expected for Serbia & Montenegro to go on the attack, you would have been very disappointed. But on the contrary, the game was going towards a satisfying 1-0 win for Argentina. Still, the spectacle was yet to come. The 31st minute brought, arguably, the most
beautiful offensive play of the World Cup. After a series of perfect passes, Cambiasso scored past the same doomed Jevric.
And as if that wasn't enough, another one came only 10 minutes later. Thanks to a defensive error by the Serbians, Javier Saviola was left all by himself in front of the goalie. Even if he managed to save it the first time, Jevric had no chance to stop Maxi Rodrigues from scoring the 3rd goal. It was 3-0 and everything seemed to be over. As far as Serbia & Montenegro was concerned, the only thing left was hope.
The second half brought nothing new in the game… at the beginning. Knowing that they will have a long tournament ahead of them, the Argentinians tried to hold the ball as much as possible. That certainly pissed off many of the Serbians, who had some pretty rough fouls against their opponents. That's the main reason why Italian referee Roberto Rosetti had to take some actions. And, in the 65th minute of the game, Matja Kezman received the red card. And with it, the ticket back to Serbia.
The final minutes of the game humiliated the Serbian side. And it was Crespo to start the show. He scored for 4-0. And was soon followed by Tevez in scoring the fifth. And if you thought you had enough, Messi scored another one - his first goal at the World Cup - in the dying minutes of the match. Now, since the Serbian humiliation was completed, the Argentinian players were ready to celebrate.
And, in front of Maradona's eyes - maybe the most impressive Argentinian fan present at the World Cup - Argentina qualified for the next round with one more game to be played. Who would have thought that they'd manage to do that, especially in this "group of death"? Whether they'll qualify from the 1st or 2nd position, it really doesn't matter. No one could stand in their way now.
