Paul Davis from the Ardour development team had the great pleasure of announcing today, April 18, the release of Ardour 4.0, a major version that includes a number of new features, numerous bug fixes, and dozens of improvements.

Ardour 4.0 is now one of the best open-source digital audio workstation application that is compatible with all the mainstream computer operating systems, including GNU/Linux, Mac OS X, and Microsoft Windows.

Prominent features of Ardour 4.0 include a revamped GUI (Graphical User Interface) that promises to provide users with a more polished and modern experience, as well as the removal of the JACK Audio Connection Kit dependency.

"The Ardour project is pleased to announce the release of Ardour 4.0," says Paul Davis. "This release brings many technical improvements, as well as new features and over a thousand bug fixes."

Here's what is new in Ardour 4.0

Ardour 4.0 aims to be a less-memory-consuming version, as the developers managed to vastly reduce memory consumption. Saving large sessions has been made easy, and multiple backends are used for providing audio and MIDI I/O, which can be changed within a running instance of the software.

Many MIDI improvements were implemented in Ardour 4.0, including MIDI latency measurement, support for plugins with MIDI output, functional MIDI bounce, better support for 14 bit MIDI controller values, as well as support for mixed data flow.

In addition, Ardour 4.0 adds support for the Akai MPK61's MIDI binding map, support for E-Mu Xtreme Lead-1 lead synth and BPM synthesizer, improved support for the Virtual Studio Technology (VST) plugin, Soundcloud export, and better support for LV2 presets and controls.

Download Ardour 4.0 for Linux, Mac OS X and Microsoft Windows right now from the application's website or via Softpedia. More details about the new features of Ardour 4.0 can be found in the official release notes.
