ArchBang 2010.10 has been released. The latest release of the minimalistic distro comes with a number of new packages and a few changes, but overall is a small update over the previous release which came just a couple of weeks ago.

"ArchBang Linux 2010.10 is out in the wild! Grab it while its hot from the download section. Reported issues have been addressed," Willensky Aristide announced.

"To install your video driver, remove vesa by running as root 'pacman -R xf86-video-vesa' & then run 'pacman -S yourvideodriverpackage'," he explained.

By default, ArchBang 2010.10 comes with the vesa driver. If you want to enable hardware acceleration, and you probably want to do that, you have to install the proper driver for your video card.

This involves rolling up your sleeves and doing quite a bit of manual work, but that shouldn't be too much of a hassle if you're running Arch Linux in the first place.

For those wanting to use a USB drive rather than burn the image to a CD, the developer recommends that you just 'dd' the ISO to the drive like so:

sudo dd if=archbang-2010.10-i686.iso of=/dev/YourUsbDevice bs=8M

"Don’t forget that you can always build Arch Linux w/ OpenBox from scratch if you want by following my guide," he added.

Highlights of ArchBang 2010.10:

· VLC was replaced by SMPlayer; · GPicView was replaced by Geeqie; · Geany added; · Dropbox added; · Minitube added; · Pidgin added; · Radio Tray added; · Cheese added; · xdg-menu added.

About ArchBang

ArchBang is a simple Linux distro based on Arch Linux and the OpenBox window manager. The emphasis is on ease of use and lightness.

Along with the snappy window manager, the package selection is also geared for simplicity and performance.

However, this does not affect usability, since packages for most uses, including multimedia and photo editing, are included by default.

It is available in both 32-bit and 64-bit flavors and can be run from a LiveCD or USB drive as well as installed on a hard drive.
