While the side-scrolling hack and slash is fun, it's also crushing the hopes of fans

Well, it appears that the gig's up, as Arc System Works' teased BloodRayne project is nothing to get worked up for, but merely a promotional effort for the Japanese launch of WayForward's BloodRayne Betrayal.

Last week, we got pretty excited when the prospect of a new Blood Rayne game was teased by the makers of Guilty Gear on a website that featured a countdown timer of six days and the mysterious acronym BRCS. The countdown timer is up, and the website has been updated with a gallery of screenshots from BloodRayne Betrayal.

BloodRayne Betrayal was released a couple of years ago on PSN and XBL, in a time when humans were still riding around on dinosaurs, that is to say 2011. The game is a side-scrolling action-adventure game with a weird artistic direction and a perverse sense of difficulty.

It is nonetheless a fun 2D hack and slash that features double pedal drumming on its soundtrack, so it's not that big of a disappointment, at least not for Japan. The rest of the world is only left with hope.

Although it's nice to see that interest in the BloodRayne franchise still exists, it would be nicer still to see a new game emerge, hopefully a solid reboot, like Tomb Raider was.
