Apricorn often makes a point of giving its customers as high a level of security as possible. As such, its products come with various security features. In the case of storage units, the Californian company doesn't remain oblivious to the obligatory hardware-based encryption. Neither does it restrict itself to that means of data protection, however, and the Aegis Bio is the most recent proof of that. It is, essentially, a highly-secure portable hard disk drive.

One of the main features that makes this device stand out from the ground is its real-time 128-bit AES hardware encryption. This functionality is provided by an Oxford Semiconductor storage controller chip and makes sure that the files stored on the drive remain inaccessible to unauthorized individuals. The other component of this storage unit, which can be seen as a complement to this encryption method, is the UPEK TouchStrip Fingerprint Sensor. This provides hardware-based Biometric protection.

Needless to say, this high level of protection would be wasted on just any product. As such, Apricorn went all the way and threw in a total storage capacity of 640GB. The USB 2.0 interface, with an integrated cable, is the means by which the Aegis Bio will communicate with personal computers. Other specifications include a rotary speed of 5,400 RPM (rotations per minute) and a buffer memory of 8 MB. Finally, there is a 16-point omni-directional shock mounting system, for better physical endurance.

It should probably be noted that Apricorn implemented a certain feature known as Password Bank. This capability replaces passwords with biometric fingerprint signatures, enabling finger-activated PC locking/unlocking and logon of Windows accounts, among other things. End-users interested in the Apricorn Aegis Bio will be pleased to know that sales are already being carried out, for the price of $159. Full details may be found by visiting this page.
