Make your app stand out from the crowd, and recommend others' apps too while you're at it

With the huge number of titles fighting for a top spot in the App Store, several companies are now jumping in, claiming to save the day for developers whose apps are not being noticed all that much. Mobui Corporation is one of those companies, promising to generate revenues for those using its AppsWeLike mobile application referral network.

AppsWeLike provides iPhone devs (and publishers) with the opportunity to insert recommendation lists of apps they like within the very iPhone applications that they build. As such, developers can generate revenue based on a click-per-action model. Consumers, for their part, can access the mobile application recommendation lists via the AppsWeLike icon found within participating apps. There, users are shown a list of apps on which they can pull up more info, or even buy.

AppsWeLike is a three-step solution, according to a diagram on the app's web site. Basically, it goes like this: the developer inserts AppsWeLike free code module into their application and the AppsWeLike icon appears; then, as consumers download and launch the app, they can click on the icon to view mobile app recommendation lists created by the app developers; consumers can also click on app titles to make the buy, at which point developers get referral commissions. Easy as pie!

“With over 27,000 applications now available in the iTunes App Store, application developers are searching for new ways to stand out from the crowd and reach more customers,” said John Burry, CEO of Mobui. “AppsWeLike solves today’s growing mobile application discovery problem by providing consumers with a simple way to find apps through the recommendations of trusted application developers and friends. At the same time, AppsWeLike creates a new revenue stream from applications that have the popularity and brand value to drive referrals based on a click-per-action model that makes sense in today’s economy.”

Surely, developers have quite a number of questions they'd like answered in regards to the new service, and that's what the FAQ is for. Here's a couple of highlights, to save some of you the trip.

If you're wondering whether or not you have to build your existing app again to use AppsWeLike, no, you don't. According to Mobui, developers must simply include the small AppsWeLike library into their app's code, then recompile and submit it to the App Store for an update. Speaking of which, AppsWeLike doesn't compete with the App Store. Not by far actually. As Mobui puts it, “we are just trying to help people find more unique and compelling applications to purchase in the App Store. If anything, we are driving more business to the App Store.”
