Cupertino reportedly enters fab industry with new acquisition

As TSMC won’t be able to meet all of Apple’s demands for chip production, the Cupertino, California-based computer giant is preparing to make its own silicon, a new report claims.

The news comes from SemiAccurate which, as its name implies, has a semi-accurate track record with such reports. But they might have something here.

“Apple has just done something that SemiAccurate has been expecting for months and entered the fab industry. No we are not joking, Apple just bought into a fab, and not in a trivial way either,” reads the report.

It's certainly interesting, and not very surprising, if the claim turns out to be true. Apple already has some chip-design experts on board (from their PA Semi acquisition years ago). Manufacturing its own chips would give its iPhone and iPad business a huge leg up.
