Apple has signed a deal with Philips to carry color-changing light bulbs that can be controlled via a free iPhone app. The home-automation system will be sold exclusively through Apple’s retail stores, according to Philips.

The Dutch multinational electronics company has released a teaser video (embedded below) to showcase its innovative lighting solution that enables anyone with a home Wi-Fi connection to set just the right mood for any time of the day.

Philips will start selling its Hue light bulbs exclusively in Apple stores across the United States.

Filip Jan Depauw, the project’s senior director, told Mashable that consumers will be free to select the lighting they want – no pre-defined settings, no complicated recommendations.

“We won’t tell you what to do,” he said, “You create your own mood.”

Via the free iPhone app that’s already available for download through the iTunes App Store, Hue lets users set a timer to turn the lights on or off when you come home, or when you leave for work.

You can even control the lights remotely from the iPhone app to foil any potential burglars.

According to Philips, “With hue, you’ll see light in a whole new way. It lets you play with tone, contrast and colour to create any lighting mood you could dream of. It’s clever, intuitive and connected. It‘s so much more than just a light bulb.”

The app features a photo picker that lets you select the color in them to bring back memories, Philips says.

“Choose your favourite holiday photos from your library and use the colour picker to recreate the ambience of that safari sunset, island paradise or snow.”

It can even help you get better grades in school, according to the Dutch company.

“Use the ‘CONCENTRATE’ Light Recipe to help you pay attention and stay focused for longer,” according to the app’s description.
