MobileMe complementary storage plans about to be discontinued

Customers who owned a MobileMe subscription when Apple transitioned to iCloud in 2011 may recall that the Cupertino giant awarded them with a complementary 20GB storage plan.

Well, that offer will be retracted on September 30, when Apple plans to discontinue the complementary storage. The standard amount of storage will be set in place for each customer in part at 5GB. So if your stuff takes up more space than that, back up your information to a computer or external drive.

If you’re one of the people about to lose their 20 gigs of free storage, don’t scuffle. The service had already been extended by an extra year.

In case you don’t know whether or not you’re targeted by the discontinuation, check your inbox for an email that goes a bit like this (via MacRumors).

"Dear [Name and Surname],

As a thank you for being a former MobileMe customer, you received a 20 GB complementary storage upgrade when you moved to iCloud. Your upgrade expires on September 30, 2013.

When it expires, your iCloud storage will be automatically adjusted to the free 5 GB plan. Note that you are currently using 5.47 GB of storage. If you exceeded your storage plan on September 30, 2013, iCloud Backup, Documents in the Cloud, and iCloud Mail will temporarily stop working.

To continue using these iCloud features without interruption, reduce the amount of iCloud storage you are using or purchase a storage plan by September 30, 2013.
