Cupertino contacted by game publisher to address software issue in OS X 10.7

Mac games publisher Aspyr Media has confirmed that Apple is working to fix a software problem that causes problems for people trying to upgrade their Civilization V copy on OS X Lion.

Users are reportedly unable to download and install the latest Civilization V update from the Mac App Store via OS X 10.7 Lion.

Apparently, the bug isn’t on the video game side, but on the OS side. Aspyr has come up with a workaround, but the problem is still there for some users.

“While this workaround works for most users, we have seen that some users are not able to reinstall the game after following the steps. Apple knows about this problem and has told us they are trying to fix it,” reads a technical note on Aspyr’s support site.

For the sake of our readers who may have ended up on this page looking for the workaround in question, here’s the instruction set offered by Aspyr:

· You will need to delete the Civilization V Campaign Edition Application from your Applications folder. · Empty the trash bin located on the dock. · You will NOT need to delete anything else, this includes the Civilization V Campaign Edition folder within Application Support or the com.aspyr.civ5campaign.plist. · Launch the App Store and select the purchases tab. · Click on the install button located to the right of the Civilization V Campaign Edition Icon.

The technical note ends with an apologetic statement from Aspyr, and the acknowledgment that “Apple is aware of the issue and is working to resolve the problem.”

The form of the fix is unclear at this point. Mac users can expect a standalone patch, or even a revised build of OS X 10.7.3 - the current version of OS X Lion.
