Cupertino agrees it was wrong to promote the LTE spec in Australia

Apple agreed to pay the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) $2.25 million (the reports don’t say if the currency is in American or Australian dollars) over the misleading marketing of its 4G iPads.

As many people should know by now, Apple’s newest-generation of iPads does ultra-fast LTE cellular networking. It also boasts WiFi. Down under, the 4G spec isn’t available at the moment, with carrier Telstra telling its customers “We’re making it clear [...] that new iPad does not run on 4G LTE networks in Australia.”

Yet Apple allowed its marketing materials to run in the country the same as in the US, where the 4G standard is usable on AT&T and Verizon. Australia got upset, and the country’s consumer watchdog sued. Pending court approval, Apple has ceded to pay up the aforementioned sum, including $300,000 to cover the ACCC’s court costs.
