Apple wants to breathe new life into the 2013 iPhone 5C

For the past few years, Apple unveiled two distinct iPhone models every year. In 2013, we saw the tech giant roll out the iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C, while in 2014 it unleashed the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus upon us.

But this year, we might see Apple release not one or two but a total of three new iPhone models. According to hit-and-miss Asian publication DigiTimes, the tech behemoth is poised to roll out three distinct iPhone devices in the second half of the year.

Apple wants to revitalize a 2013 model

The publication claims that these handsets will be released as the iPhone 6S, iPhone 6S Plus, and interestingly enough, the iPhone 6C which will be a 4-inch affair.

All the phones will take advantage of LTPS panels, and LG Display, Sharp and Japan Display will supply the components to the iPhone 6S Plus and iPhone 6C, while the iPhone 6S will be served solely by Japan Display and LG.

So it appears Apple is looking to offer a successor to its 4-inch, low-end polycarbonate iPhone 5C phone, which made a debut in 2013.

The iPhone 6C is poised to continue the road the original model has embarked upon, arriving with a current-gen A8 system-on-chip.

By contrast, the 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch iPhones will enjoy the perks and benefits of the yet unannounced A9 chip.

All the tree models will benefit from Corning Gorilla Glass (presumably 4) protection and will arrive with NFC and fingerprint scanning capabilities.

Last but not least, the report goes on to mention that Wistron will be in charge of manufacturing the upcoming iPhone 6C, while Foxconn and Pegatron will be given the more difficult task of mass-producing the premium models.

Will a new iPhone 6C be successful?

Given the success of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus models, which managed to register a whopping 74.5 million sales in the Q4 2014 quarter alone, some of you might be wondering why Apple would decide to go back to the 4-inch form factor.

The Cupertino tech giant is probably thinking of those who received the iPhone 6 Plus with skepticism and criticized the device’s huge display. So the iPhone 6C might cater to the needs of those who aren't sold to maxi displays yet and don’t want to break the piggy bank either.
