Lucky Bag winter promo allows customers to save plenty

An annual promotion in Japan will see Apple fans nab pricey items for far less, including Macs and iPads. If last year’s event is any indication, a customer can find a surprise MacBook Air computer enclosed in the bag.

Japan calls the Lucky Bag promo "Fukubukuro." Each year, devoted fans line up at their local stores with their fingers crossed to stumble upon a bag with more than an iPod inside.

What’s a Lucky Bag?

Priced at around 36,000 yen (around $350 last year), the bags regularly contain more than two items and their value almost always exceeds the actual cumulated price. In other words, customers get huge discounts on these bags, in a deal that can be likened to Black Friday.

The real benefit, however, is the surprise MacBook or iPad that can also be found in these bags. Essentially included for free alongside the rest of the stuff, a $1,000 (6,228.45 yen) MacBook Air is enough to convince any fanatic to queue up and endure freezing temperatures until the glass gates of the Apple Store open to the public.

iPhones have so far not been included in the promotion.

Lucky Bag Purchase Policy

Lucky Bags can only be purchased at Apple Retail Stores and are limited to one bag per person per day. Lucky Bag contents are not returnable, refundable, or exchangeable, except for situations where the hardware is flawed.

"If there is a flaw in the hardware or accessory, please return the product with the original Lucky Bag receipt and original packaging within fourteen (14) calendar days from the date of purchase. Non-Apple brand products are sold by Apple 'as is'," says the Mac maker. "Consult the manufacturer of such non-Apple brand for warranty terms and conditions."

Looters looking to resell the bag at a higher price will be denied service. Apple says it will take the liberty to select customers based on the suspicion that some of them might try to sell the bag at a higher price once they leave the store. A bit drastic, if you ask us.

"The Apple Store sells and ships products to end user customers only. You may not purchase for resale. Apple reserves the right to refuse or cancel your order if Apple suspects you are purchasing for resale," the company notes.

Customers must agree to all these terms, as well as others mentioned in the "Lucky Bag Purchase Policy," before they proceed to buy a bag on January 2.

As usual, the California company reserves the right to change these rules at any time, while customers need to be over 13 years old and to reside in Japan in order to be eligible for the promo. iTunes Cards can also be used in certain situations.
