Apple has hired Marcelo Malini Lamego an expert in medical devices and medical sensors who worked for almost a decade as the CTO of Cercacor, a medical devices company. The hiring is likely for Apple’s iWatch team.

Lamego reportedly joined Apple at the end of January. He’s helped develop “non-invasive” patient monitoring devices and sensors, and he’s responsible for around 70 inventions related to “optimization and signal processing, devices, sensors and patient monitoring technologies,” according to his LinkedIn profile.

“Marcelo Malini Lamego is currently with Apple, Cupertino, CA. In the past, he concentrated his efforts on the development of medical technologies and products,” that same profile states.

Lamego is also the author of around three dozen peer-reviewed articles on Automatic Control and Optimization, Adaptive Systems and Neural Networks, Power Electronics, and Mossbauer Spectroscopy. His studies include a Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University, California.

Lamego likely has been hired at Apple to work on the upcoming revolutionary iWatch.

The smart-watch is said to boast an impressive amount of sensors, some of which track a person’s blood pressure, glucose levels, hydration levels, etc.

Apple has hired numerous medical experts over the past year. One of these people is a sleep expert. The hiring spurred speculation that Apple’s iWatch will use technology that allows people to monitor and adjust their sleeping habits.

According to one knowledgeable person quoted in the Apple blogosphere, the iWatch will even have a function that wakes the user from sleep through vibrations.

A launch date for the device is hard to estimate, especially with no solid leaks around, but many believe the unveiling will take place in summer, at the Worldwide Developers Conference.

Apple also has the iPhone 6 prepared for 2014. Most bets are on a launch around September, like in previous years.
