On Monday, Cupertino-based company Apple announced the launch of a new iPhone model, namely iPhone 4, which comes with a nice range of improvements when compared to the previously available models. Set to become available for purchase on June 24, with pre-orders kicking off on June 15, the iPhone 4 will be delivered to users in the US, France, Germany, Japan and the UK in the beginning, while landing in more countries in July, including Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, New Zealand, Singapore, South Korea, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland. 88 countries are expected to receive it by the end of September, Apple revealed.

The handset comes with a 3.5-inch IPS touchscreen display that can boast a 960 x 640 pixel resolution, the highest on the market today, while including a 5-megapixel photo snapper on the back, with auto focus, LED flash and HD video recording, complemented by a secondary VGA camera for video calls (only on Wi-Fi for the time being). Powered by Apple’s A4 processor, the new iPhone model brings another novelty into the mix, namely multitasking, while running under the brand new iOS 4.

Measuring 115.2 x 58.6 x 9.3mm and weighing in at 4.8 oz, the new iPhone 4 is the slimmest handset on the market, Apple claims. The smartphone's front and back are made of aluminosilcate glass, which has been strengthened to be scratch resistant and durable. The handset also includes a built-in 3-axis gyroscope, along with compass, accelerometer, and AGPS, not to mention Quad-band GSM, Penta-band HSPA and Wi-Fi (802.11b/g/n) connectivity options.

According to Apple, its new A4 processor can offer great processor and graphic performance, as well as long battery life. The new iPhone 4 is able to offer up to seven hours of talk time on 3G networks, up to 10 hours of video playback, or up to 40 hours of audio playback. When it comes to web browsing, it can deliver or up to 10 hours on Wi-Fi, or up to six hours on 3G. In addition to 802.11n Wi-Fi networking, the iPhone 4 comes with support for 7.2Mbps downlink and 5.8Mbps uplink speeds on HSUPA.

The new iPhone 4 will become available for purchase in two color versions, namely white and black. Two models of the device will be put on sale, differentiated by the internal memory, namely a 16GB version that will be priced at $199 in the US, and a 32GB model that will go for $299 in the US. While set to hit the shelves on June 24, the device will become available for pre-order on June 15. The exact pricing of the device in other countries hasn't been unveiled yet.
