The tech giant up in Cupertino, California, has published their 2014 Environmental Responsibility Report that covers last year's achievements.

The yearly report goes over four main chapters: Environmental Responsibility, Climate Change, Greener Materials and Finite Resources. All of them are detailed over 20 pages. The main ideas are: Apple wants to reduce their impact on climate change by using renewable energy sources, pioneer in the use of greener materials and conserve precious resources.

Apple makes the case that every data center they own is powered entirely by clean energy like solar, wind and geothermal. "Whenever you download a song, update an app, or ask Siri a question, the energy Apple uses is provided by nature," the report says.

They also mention that the company managed to reduce the average total power consumed by Apple products by 57 percent since 2008. It's not just their facilities, but the iPhone or Mac you have with you now.

Apple has also improved their products by eliminating harmful toxins like PVC or phthalates. That applies to their manufacturing process as well.

A special chapter in their report is dedicated to the new Apple Campus 2, nicknamed the Spaceship. Apple wants to create "a green building from the ground up" and they believe the new campus will push the boundaries of technology to be the most energy efficient building of its kind.

The Apple Campus 2 will be powered by 100 percent renewable energy sources and the air will flow freely between the inside and outside of the building, providing natural ventilation for 75 percent of the year. Also, the sunlight will power one of the largest corporate energy installations in the world.

If the building itself was not enough, the site will be an open space populated by 7000 trees. 6000 of those will be newly planted shade and fruit trees.

Apple pride themselves in creating a greener compute for their employees. Over 5000 employees will be able to get to work using biofuel buses, bicycles, carpools or just by walking to the office. Over 300 electric vehicle charging stations will be installed for the "clean" drivers  working at Apple.

The Apple Spaceship will provide over 1000 shared bikes so anyone can just grab one and go home just to return the next day.

The 2014 Environmental Report goes over the exact numbers for their Energy Consumption and Carbon Emissions. They also make the case for smaller packaging for iPhones which translates into 60% more boxes that fit in a plane so the planes take less fuel to carry the devices to Apple Stores around the world.
