“…you need it for memory addressability beyond 4GB,” according to Anand Chandrasekher

Anand Chandrasekher, senior vice president and chief marketing officer at Qualcomm, said in a recent interview that Apple’s 64-bit thing with the iPhone 5s was nothing but a mere marketing stunt.

He put it bluntly, explaining that 64-bit basically becomes relevant when you have the memory to use it with. And 1GB is not enough, according to Chandrasekher, who also led Intel’s mobile platforms group for a while.

“I know there’s a lot of noise because Apple did [64-bit] on their A7. I think they are doing a marketing gimmick. There’s zero benefit a consumer gets from that,” he said in the interview.

“Predominantly... you need it for memory addressability beyond 4GB. That’s it. You don’t really need it for performance, and the kinds of applications that 64-bit get used in mostly are large, server-class applications,” Chandrasekher added.

Marketing gimmick or no marketing gimmick, the iPhone 5s is the first-ever smartphone with a 64-bit processor. Which gives Apple some edge over competitors’ hardware.
