The new H.264 codec

As scheduled, Apple has launched a version of the QuickTime 7 software solution for Windows only a month and a half after the release of Mac OS X "Panther" and "Tiger", which benefited the first from the multimedia player's functions.

The standard version of the program can be downloaded for free, whereas the Pro version is priced at $29.99. The final Windows versions of the QuickTime 7 Player and QuickTime 7 Pro will be available staring from this summer, Apple announced.

This latest preview version of the multimedia decoding software will allow the streaming and playing of high-definition video content. In this way, QuickTime 7 is the first mainstream solution capable of decoding H.264 and of streaming and playbacking High Definition video content for Windows platforms.

The H.264 codec offers excellent video quality for several types of signals, regardless of the mobile device: 3G compatible mobile devices, iChat AV solutions etc. The codec was adopted by the DVD Forum and the Blu-ray Disc Association.

QuickTime 7 will now offer support for configuring and coding 5.1 audio, VBScript native support and full screen control. The new control features include: variable speeds during movie playback, zero-configuration streaming and live re-dimensioning.
