Although it was initially reported that the service plans for the iPhone would not be disclosed until the 29th of June, AT&T has been quick to rectify that the rate plans will be disclosed until then and that people will be entering stores knowing all the information they need.

Larry Carter, senior vice president of sales for AT&T mentioned that AT&T will be announcing new service plans for the iPhone, without actually going into details about what they are beyond the fact that they will be customized for the iPhone. "Regardless of which device you're using today, you pay us a certain amount for (voice) minutes, and you also pay us for data units," he says. "That is also true on the iPhone."

The conclusion was drawn that the details will remain secret until the day of launch, but AT&T spokesman Mark Siegel, was quick to elaborate and mention that this would not be the case. "We will disclose before the 29th," said Siegel. Customers will be walking into the AT&T and Apple Stores knowing exactly how much they will be paying, both for the hardware and for the cellular service plans. While details are still few, Siegel did mention that "it's not going to be anything exotic." Also it appears that there will be separate voice and data services components to the iPhone service plans, instead of a one-size-fits-all approach. The one detail that has not budged at all is that the two-year service commitment will be required.

Considering the crowds that AT&T is preparing for, informing the public about the service plans as soon as possible is the best possible move. Although it is yet unconfirmed, there have been reports that both a data and a voice plan will be required for the iPhone and that one simply will not be able to get one without the other.
