It has become customary that the United States Patent and Trademark Office publishes new Apple patents every week. Some of them were filed over six years ago, other are brand new, but all of them bring new ideas to light.

The most recent one has been discovered by Patently Apple

It is a patent for a brand new iDevice Dock that works with virtually any iOS device. The dock is described as "an aesthetically pleasing universal" device that works with gadgets of different sizes and shapes and can be individually customized for each of them.

The universal dock may support an electronic device using a support layer that may include any suitable material, including an array of vertical members, an elastic sponge-like substance, or any other suitable material. The most interesting part is that the compression of the support layer may be retained for future use with the electronic device, but when the gadget is removed it goes back to its original shape.

This was invented by Jeffrey Terlizzi and was filed back in the first half of 2008.

Another patent granted to Apple is related to a Uni-Directional Fiber Composite Structure that has been used to manufacture the iPad Smart Case. According to Patently Apple, an accessory unit that may be combined with a consumer electronic device to form an assembly. The accessory unit may include a front flap with segments formed from panels and folding regions between that provide the front flap with flexibility. The accessory unit may also feature a rear cover that includes a recessed portion, which may be formed from a flexible material, and which defines a chamber. The rear cover may also include a frame coupled to the recessed portion that extends about an opening to the chamber.
