12-inch model to “enrich” Apple’s product lineup

In anticipation of the redesigned MacBook Air, analysts in the Far East say Apple is on track to increase shipments this year, coupled with potential price cuts in the notebook category.

These Taiwan-based supply chain sources cited by DigiTimes estimate that 2015 will be a fruitful year for Apple’s computer business in particular. Macs will grow 10-15% year-over-year (YoY) from 19.59 million units in 2014 to 20-23 million units in 2015.

The analysts noted that “the release of the much-anticipated 12-inch MacBook Air will further enrich Apple's product lineup and offer more flexibility for Apple to adjust its pricing strategy.” As such, the Cupertino company will “likely” cut the prices of its 11-inch and 13-inch models, after the 12-incher debuts.

The second price reduction for Apple’s MBA

If the prediction holds true, this means Apple will not only refuse to discontinue the entry-level MBA, but that it will actually make it even more affordable than it already is. And since the California tech giant likes its numbers round, the move will slash at least $100 / €100.

The 11-inch MacBook Air currently sells for $899 in the United States and €899 across Europe. If the forecast proves accurate, Apple cold start selling its most affordable notebook ever this year, at $799 / €799. This price range is currently found only on the company’s refurbs section.

Such a move would also give competitors a run for their money. While Apple computers still carry premium prices, customers are well aware of the value they get for their dollar when they shop Apple.

According to recent hardware leaks, the 12-inch MacBook Air is likely already being manufactured (or at least prototyped), and is expected to hit the shelves between Q1 and Q3 of calendar 2015.
