14 DAY TRIAL // Apple wants to ensure that no more iPods blow up in people’s faces by hiring an experienced person with a background in electrical/electronics engineering to help with the testing of consumer products.
The Product Safety Engineer position is open at Apple’s Santa Clara offices.
Offered in Apple's Product Safety Engineering department, within the company’s Product Design organization, the job is “to ensure that Apple products are safe for use throughout the world and comply with worldwide safety requirements.”
According to the job description, the Cupertino company selling iPhones and iPads is seeking “an energetic and detail oriented engineer with a background in electrical/electronics engineering to support safety engineering and testing of consumer products.”
You’d think the job is fairly easy, but the list of responsibilities and required education is pretty darn long. If you’re interested, go to Apple’s site here and have a look.
One of the requirements in particular states, “Develop deep understanding of manufacturing processes to identify and address potential manufacturing defects that can lead to potential safety issues.”
Reading this bullet point, we can’t help but recall the news about a Texas woman whose iPod touch blew up in her face (allegedly), burning her.
The woman actually filed a lawsuit against Apple. The court filing states, “On February 22, 2011, Tina Kings was laying in her bed with her iPod touch listening to music when Tina felt a burning sensation on her eye.”
The documents also state, “As a direct and proximate result of the explosion and result of the explosion and resulting electrical shock of the iPod touch, Tina King received burns to her eye and was otherwise caused pain and suffering resulting in serious injury to the plaintiff, Tina King, including but not limited to the burns on her eye and the incurring medical and mental conditions which will cause her to suffer pain, mental distress, emotional distress, and otherwise for the rest of her life.”
