Apple wants to take advantage of the new storage technologies in order to cement the position of the iPod in the portable video market. "According to anonymous film industry insiders Apple has been asking studios to include iPod video content on Blu-ray discs," iClaire reports for iPod Hub.
Although there
has been much talking about the full screen iPod, for quite some time now, the product has not yet seen the light of day, and it may be quite some time before it does. Meanwhile, movies on Blu-ray discs are expected to start shipping some time in the next month, and this is a good opportunity for Apple to ensure that there is a sufficiently large library of iPod compatible content out there, readily available for use when new iPods come out.
So far details are sketchy on the resolution of the content Apple wants, but it seems very unlikely that it will be less than the current standard resolution for video on an iPod. With the storage capacity of the Blu-ray discs being 50Gbs, there is more than enough room to go around and plenty left over for a full-length iPod ready movie.
Apple's close relationships with names such as Sony and Disney, give it an edge when it comes to getting this content, a move that would put it one step further ahead of the competition.
