Office for iPad was officially launched in late March and since then millions of users who previously purchased an Apple tablet downloaded the free version of the productivity suite.

Julia White, the general manager of Microsoft's Office Division and the one who unveiled Office for iPad in March, said at the TechEd North America 2014 conference in Houston that more than the productivity solution aimed at Apple customers has been downloaded by more than 27 million times.

In April, Microsoft said that it already had 4.4 million paid users for Office for iPad, so figures most likely increased significantly in the last few weeks, as most of those who downloaded the app on Apple tablets are very likely existing Office 365 users.

Office for iPad is available with a freeware license for those who only want to view documents in Word, Excel, or PowerPoint, but editing features are only offered to those who have already purchased an Office 365 subscription.

The cheapest subscription package available right now is called Office 365 Personal and can be yours for $6.99 (€5.05) per month or $69.99 (€50.5) per year, providing support for one PC or Mac and one tablet to be connected at the same time.
